" 'Higher tariff needed' for solar panel projects to make money" from South China Morning Post

"The low power tariffs offered recently by mainland developers of solar power projects are loss-making and unsustainable, according to Trony Solar Holdings, a panel maker based in Longgang, Shenzhen.

The company is the world's fourth-largest thin-film solar panel maker, making 90 per cent of its revenues from the "off-power-grid" market. Trony will not get involved in developing solar farms unless it can earn a sufficient profit margin, said chairman Li Yi during a media plant visit."

"Beijing wants the nation to have 20,000MW of solar power generation capacity by 2020.

"Scouring the Globe For Emerging Risks" from Bloomberg Businessweek

"Vinay Mistry, a member of the Lloyd's of London Exposure Management team, talks about anticipating risks in some very unusual places

Among emerging natural risks, what are you focusing on?

There's space risks. There is a solar cycle, which is a period of about 11 years. It's the sun having a cycle in terms of how much electromagnetic radiation is emitted. We're entering a period of slightly elevated activity. The peak activity will be seen between 2011 and 2013. Electromagnetic radiation in space could impact satellites, but there are also "on earth" risks to ground stations, in terms of providing electricity for networks or grids that supply power to cities. A widespread, prolonged failure of electricity transmission grids would feel like going back in time to the 17th century."

"Suntech Power Holdings Co. and Infigen Energy propose building four solar energy farms in Australia's New South Wales state that would cost A$780 million ($792 million), documents filed with the government show."

"The Chinese solar-panel maker and the Sydney-based renewable energy company have applied for funding from the Australian government's A$1.5 billion Solar Flagships program. Infigen expects a decision on that funding in the first half of 2011, spokesman Richard Farrell said by phone today." from Bloomberg
