Among Chinese friends drawn to Hong Kong, the intangible appeal of freedom appears to play a big part: the curious, causal freedom to buy any book you want, to surf the net without having to scale the Great Firewall. Paradoxically, though Hong Kong depends on China's economic robustness for its continued success, its appeal lies in capitalising on the mainland's weaknesses."
